Meet D. Colton Baker, family law attorney and mediator

Growing up, my family had some hard years. My dad ended up in front of the legal system, and walked out of that courtroom a different man. He turned his life around for good, and went on to work with kids in foster care, showing up for children who needed someone.

That moment stayed with me. I watched the legal system become the line between one version of my family’s story and another, and I decided I wanted to be the person in that room who understood what was actually at stake.

I became a probation officer, then a foster parent, then a family law attorney. My wife and I have been married over twelve years, and we have five kids. I’ve spent my whole life around families in hard seasons, watching what breaks them, and what brings them back.

When you sit across from me, you’re not a case file. You’re a family at a turning point.

Something Nobody Says Out Loud in This Industry

Most people going through a divorce think the same thing: I need the toughest attorney I can find.

I understand why. You’re scared. You want to protect yourself. You want to win.

But I need to tell you something the rest of this industry won’t. The most aggressive attorney in the room is often the worst thing that can happen to your kids.

I’ve watched it happen, not from a textbook. From experience. As a kid. As a probation officer. In the cases I’ve handled. The families who fought the hardest didn’t win. Their kids paid for years.

That’s why I practice the way I do. Peace first. Fight when it matters.

How I Can Help

Divorce

Whether contested or uncontested, divorce is one of the most significant transitions you’ll go through. I handle it with strategy, honesty, and a steady hand from start to finish.

Custody

Parenting plans, child support, paternity, and modifications. Every decision is made with one question driving it: what does the right outcome actually look like here?

Adoption

Adoption is about making permanent what love already made real. Whether you’re pursuing step-parent adoption or navigating termination of parental rights, I handle these with the care and weight they deserve.

Juvenile Law

When a minor is facing juvenile court charges or DCS involvement, families need strong representation quickly. I know the juvenile system and fight to protect your child’s future.

Estate Planning

Not having a plan is a plan. Just not one you chose. Wills, powers of attorney, conservatorship, and guardianship put you in control of what happens to the people you love.

Mediation

In Tennessee, mediation is required before most contested divorce and custody cases go to trial. You’re going through this process either way. I make it as clear and productive as possible.

What Clients Say

“Going through a divorce is never easy, but having the Colton Baker by my side made all the difference. The legal representation I received from him exceeded my expectations. He was extremely knowledgeable, professional, but also compassionate, patient, and genuinely invested in my well-being in every aspect of the process. I felt like he had my back the entire time. He guided me through every step with clarity and confidence, always making sure I understood my options and felt supported. His attention to detail and fierce advocacy helped me navigate a very difficult time with strength and peace of mind. We did not always agree on actions to take during the process, but he was always very clear why he recommended such actions. At no time did anyone at the office take any action on my behalf without first having a conversation with me and getting my approval. He is conscious of your time and money. He did not take advantage of my time, nor did he overcharge me. He actually took time off of the day long mediation and only charged me for half of the day since the opposing party was delaying the process so much. I definitely highly recommend Colton Baker to anyone seeking assistance.”

He was fair priced, quick at responding to my questions, thorough, very helpful and friendly, professional & just awesome all around! Without his willingness to help & knowledge of the laws, I’m not sure if I could’ve been successful at reuniting my little family!! Thank you for everything!!”
